You are receiving this email because you either were previously a subscriber to The Weekly BROADCast newsletter from BROAD Digital Consulting or because you subscribed to this new, rebranded newsletter (same authors, different name/look/feel) unstructured data. Your information has not been sold - you had previously opted in to receiving this newsletter. If you would prefer not to receive it anymore, you obviously may unsubscribe. It will probably hurt our feelings, but we will carry on through the pain.

📫inside this edition:

  • he’s a therapist but he’s not YOUR therapist and i guess that’s why he thinks it’s okay that you know about his butthole

  • new open roles, both contract and full-time, to include some short-term projects

  • some great opportunities to log off and touch grass (or craft)

  • basically, whatever all the AI companies really want badly, i think i want the opposite

*a quick promise to you: our newsletter will always only ever be written by humans and never by robots. we wish we could say that this is out of love & respect for writing & the environment, and while those are both true, it’s mostly that we really tried a couple years ago for months on end to get the robots to write in this very weird (but always hilarious, obvi) tone and it just…has not delivered. easier AND funnier to keep it highly manual and we are very okay with that. thank you for your understanding.

😏well, actually…

while normally how a mansplainer gets his water, “well, actually” will explore the different angles of an argument or conversation & favor celebrating nuance & complexity over the short-term satisfaction of “hot take culture”.

🤔 should licensed professionals maybe sign confidentiality agreements…with themselves?

I wrote this week’s Well, Actually and, well, actually, it was a bit longer than I like it to be to exist inside an email. The point of Well, Actually is to be able to dig into the nuance of a specific topic vs flattening it to the point of simplicity. It’s also to dig deeper into downstream implications and future impacts from a particular topic or event, and to understand how our engagement with that topic or event helps or harms us now and in the future.

And this week, there was a lot to say.

So in this issue, my Well, Actually is also gonna be a Bonus Rant bc you get a lil extra there, too. And reader, it’s got everything: We’ve got therapists who are influencers telling you about their buttholes! We’ve got guys beating their faces with hammers to look hot! We’ve got ethical gray areas and people making $50K a month and the question of how responsible licensed professionals are for the content they put out online!

Should licensed therapists or medical professionals be able to describe personal sexual fantasies online for everyone to see? Go ahead and read this week’s Well, Actually: Director’s Cut: Extended Version: Deleted Scenes and tell me what you think.

🤔poll/short answer

Would you hire or work with a licensed professional who was also a well-known paid content creator or influencer in their field?

This could be a therapist, a medical specialist, a lawyer, a veterinarian - anyone whose profession requires licensure - and assumes that they are also sought out for sponsorships as an influencer. Vote by clicking your choice!

what you had to say about our last poll

“i hate when i find myself playing on my ipad while watching a movie, or even just watching an endless stream of tv for twice the time it would have taken me to watch a movie. i scroll through short form videos so fast, but i do still read a lot of books. of course that's in half hour snippets during my commute...”

- response from the poll in issue #2: Do you find that your attention span for longer-form content has decreased over the years?”

📂tabs i have open

1caity weaver is arguably the reason i started writing on the internet & was a massive source of inspiration for my writing style & voice. this article on “endless appetizers” at tgi friday’s is 12 years old & still one of my favorite things ever produced on the internet; god bless the wayback machine for retaining it.

🎬action item(s)

each week, we’ll end our newsletter with action item(s), or “what TF are you supposed to do about all this now?” we hope they help. 🤞🏻

  • don’t feed the content creators. and by this, i mean: if you have beef with something they said, take a screenshot and share it on your own page - don’t give them money through your attention

  • somebody please go to the best free restaurant bread place and tell me how it is

  • vote in the poll and share your thoughts!

  • try one of those “offline” activities we keep hearing so much about that i included here

  • as always, check out the web version of this post and start the conversation (i don’t actually get paid for that, just like, in full transparency)

XOXO,

the unstructured data team
